Help Blog / Info Center

Hello,

Thanks for checking out my help blog.  The KMS team always likes finding the newest emerging trends in techs and gadgets, but whats more important
is helping our customers find the right technology to fit their needs. I know that its hard to keep up with every new product so I created this blog for the
items we think are actually worth sharing with you.

Also, don't forget that you can also put any tech 'buzzword' (ie: AirPlay)  into our site searchbar in the top-right corner.
You can usually get a few results per search.

:) Glad to help.

Sonos Firewall Settings

posted Dec 10, 2012, 1:20 PM by Sidney Ruffin   [ updated Dec 10, 2012, 1:21 PM ]

I have a software firewall, how do I configure it to work with my Sonos Wireless HiFi System?

What is a firewall?:

A firewall is a dedicated appliance, or software running on a computer, which inspects network traffic passing through it, and denies or permits passage based on a set of rules. It is a software or hardware that is normally placed between a protected network and a not protected network and acts like a gate to protect assets to ensure that nothing private goes out and nothing malicious comes in.

Common symptoms of firewall issues:

Error message: The computer "computer name" could not be found / is not responding
Error message: Searching for ZonePlayers and ZoneBridges
Radio tab is empty or missing content
Sonos software on your computer is not able to connect to a ZonePlayer or ZoneBridge

- When configuring your firewall, be sure to look for pre-defined rules that could be blocking the ports Sonos uses.

Below are the ports that Sonos uses:

TCP/IP:
80 (Internet Radio, updates and registration)
445 (CIFS)
3400 (incoming UPnP events)
443 (Rhapsody, Napster, and SIRIUS Internet Radio)
4070 (Spotify incoming events)

UDP:
136-139 (NetBIOS)
1900 (UPnP events and device detection)
1901 (UPnP responses)
6969 (Initial configuration)
2869, 10243, 10280-10284 (Windows Media Player NSS)

If you have recently uninstalled a security suit of firewall, please run their removal utility. This will remove all traces of either firewall from your computer.

Lighting Control With Lutron

Lutron® Serena™ Remote Controlled Cellular Shades: Choosing the Control that's Best for You

Creative lighting design can raise an individual's level of perception while creating the mood and warmth needed to change an anonymous interior into a place of beauty and ambience.

Lighting is an integral factor of design - it should not only be considered a form of artistic expression or basic general lighting; rather, it begins as an expression.

Fast Facts

Lutron innovative light control solutions offer many benefits ranging from energy savings to increases in productivity. Here are few exciting facts about Lutron products.

Save Energy & Money                Productivity                Light Sources

Save Energy & Money

All Lutron dimmers save energy.

Lutron has been promoting the energy-saving benefits of lighting controls since the early 1960's when its owner, Joel Spira, developed the first commercially successful solid-state, variable wallbox dimmer switch that was widely accepted in residential and commercial markets.

All light sources use less energy when dimmed.

Incandescent, halogen, CFLs,and LED bulbs use less energy when dimmed. For example, a halogen light source dimmed 35% reduces energy use by 28%. On average, dimming an incandescent or halogen light will reduce energy use by about 20%.

The more you dim, the more you save.

Dimmers operated over longer periods of time, at light levels dimmed greater than 20%, save more electricity and money, and shorten the payback period.

All Lutron dimmers extend bulb life. Dimmers reduce power to the lighting source or bulb, so they save energy and extend bulb life. Incandescent and halogen bulbs last up to 20 times longer when used with a dimmer, further extending the money saved.

Reducing America’s energy costs

Lutron estimates that its lighting control products and solutions helped electrical customers save $1 billion in energy costs in 2008, reducing the US lighting bill by 3%.

If every U.S. home changed 1 light switch to a Lutron dimmer…

It would save an additional $816 million in electricity per year. It would also cumulatively reduce CO2 emissions by 4.3 billion pounds, comparable to taking 370,000 cars off the road.

Installing a Lutron dimmer saves money.

A residential dimmer saves $7.36 each year in energy costs and pays for itself in about two years (average residential dimmer costs $16) if dimmed only 20%. If a light is dimmed 50%, the owner will experience a $30 annual savings. A Lutron commercial dimmer saves $85 per year and pays for itself in about 14 months (average commercial dimmer cost is $100 - more than the residential purchase because the commercial dimmer controls larger power loads).

It is more economical to conserve electricity with dimmers than to build generating capacity.

It costs $0.35 to save a watt of electricity with a dimmer. It costs $1.40 - $7.75 to build a watt of electrical generating capacity.

Dimming saves energy and the environment while enriching your life.

While there are many ways to reduce energy use, most involve sacrificing something; few actually enrich the quality of living and working environments. Dimmers and other lighting controls allow individuals to adjust light levels for specific entertainment options, enhance ambiance, set a mood, and take advantage of daylight to reduce energy use. Lutron dimmers are one of the very few energy-saving products that both save energy and enrich your life.

Lutron solutions contribute to 37 out of 110 possible points in the LEED 2009 NC rating system.

Because of their energy-saving benefits and contributions toward minimizing environmental impact, Lutron lighting controls and shading controls can contribute significantly to attaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building certification for new construction. Credits that Lutron solutions help attain include those for sustainable sites, energy and atmosphere, material and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovative design.

Productivity

Lutron lighting controls increase comfort and enhance satisfaction thereby improving productivity.

Lutron lighting controls and shades provide a comfortable and productive visual environment using energy-saving products that can pay for themselves. Whether you are a homeowner seeking to enhance the appearance or atmosphere of your home, or a facilities manager looking to augment employee productivity and comfort while reducing energy-related costs, Lutron offers the best lighting control solutions.

Good lighting and the ability to control the visual environment increase comfort and productivity.

Research confirms that when people are able to control light levels based on their preferences, they highly value it and are more productive. Productivity can be increased 5-10% by giving building occupants control over their visual environment.

Personal control of lighting leads to higher job satisfaction and productivity, and ultimately to employee retention.

The option to exercise personal choice in the workplace – like controlling lighting – gives employees a sense of empowerment and satisfaction, and provides a level of visual comfort in the work environment.

Productivity increases can pay for light control systems.

Based on available data and research, it’s estimated that productivity increases off-set costs for a light control system in 7 months or less. A productivity increase of only 1% can easily pay for the light control system in 7 months or less.

Light Sources

Lutron makes products that dim all light sources.

Dimmers work on sources ranging from incandescent (including halogen) and fluorescent, to compact fluorescent (CFLs) and LEDs.

Lutron provides the flexibility to choose the light source you prefer.

Because Lutron products are available to dim all light sources, you can choose the lamp type that best meets your needs and matches your personal preferences.

Lutron believes that CFLs play an effective role in home lighting.

CFLs can be used for appropriate applications in conjunction with other light sources to reduce energy use, especially when used with dimmers and other light control products. Lutron also believes that the best lighting solution is one that matches the right source (incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, CFLs, LEDs) with the right use (task lighting, aesthetic, ambient, security, area illumination).

The best way to light home and commercial settings includes use of dimmers, sensors, and multiple lighting source types, including CFLs.

To maximize energy savings, all lighting sources should be matched to the application for which they are best suited, and integrated with light control devices like dimmers, occupancy sensors, timers, vacancy sensors, and shading systems.

Screw-in CFL bulbs are energy efficient and have the longest life.

However, they provide less pleasing light, start up slowly, may flicker, and must be disposed at a qualified collection site. Most dim poorly, although Lutron offers dimmers for the Philips Energy Saver dimmable CFL.

Incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, CFL, and LED light sources can all play a role in effective lighting solutions.

When used with a dimmer or in combination with lighting controls, all light sources can address energy efficiency, comfort, productivity, and overall satisfaction.

Power-line networking: Going where Ethernet and Wifi Can't

posted Dec 21, 2011, 4:08 AM by Sidney Ruffin

When your router/modem is "here" and you have one or more computers either upstairs or downstairs from that location -- or both! -- life begins to get complex. Hardwiring your network is fast and efficient, but it's often not a practical answer, especially for homes and small offices. Renters may have difficulty convincing their landlords to let them rewire a home or apartment that they don't own themselves. Even wiring your own place may not be fiscally feasible.

Most people who can't or won't hardwire for broadband have an obvious alternative: Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, there can be architectural anomalies between floors or even between rooms that can interfere with Wi-Fi signals, resulting in spotty, or even dead, signals. So what do you do?

Well, you can try using a power-line device.

Power-line networking uses existing electrical wiring to connect your computers and other devices to your network router. The technology behind it allows for multiple signals (and therefore several networked devices) to share the same wires that already exist in your walls without colliding with one another while they're communicating. Power-line networking began life at 14Mbit/sec. in 2001 and then bumped up to 100Mbit/sec. in 2005 when hardwire and Wi-Fi were still at 10/100Mbit/sec. and 57Mbit/sec., respectively. Power-line reached a claimed 200Mbit/sec. in 2007, which should be more than enough for our data and streaming-media needs.

Now as we enter 2012, KMS offers power-line gigabit networking at up to 500Mbit/sec in up to 16 locations in your home or office! The fast and robust signals produced by these devices can be used to stream media on a network without bogging down the network for other users.  In addition, you can add a power-line wireless access point to give your wifi extended coverage.
